Hi, I’m Matilda.
Informed by my degree in History of Art, my work focuses on architectural subjects alongside landscapes and fine line studies, creating paintings that capture the identity of a place through structure and atmosphere, reflecting places of personal significance and meaning.
Find out more about my process below.
My Approach - ‘Home’ Series
I handcraft bespoke watercolour and fine line portraits of homes, carefully building each artwork to balance the architectural detail with its character - capturing both the structure of the building and the feeling it holds.
Architectural observation through artistic interpretation
Prior to beginning an artwork, I use detailed photographs to study the building’s architecture and make preparatory, supporting notes on its unique structure, form, colour. This enables me to confidently draft the building’s proportions on paper before translating it into the final, bespoke artwork with fine line and watercolour.
Emotional storytelling through the character and atmosphere of a home
Beyond the fine lines and varied colours utilised, my focus is on capturing the emotional character of a home — the atmosphere it holds, and the sense of significance it carries for the people connected to it. I’m interested in how a building becomes more than a structure: how it holds memory, transition, and meaning, particularly at moments such as moving into or leaving a home.
My Approach - ‘Landscape’ Series
This series of acrylic landscape paintings focuses on natural places connected to memory, experience, and personal significance. Each work explores the emotional relationship between people and place, using colour, atmosphere, and composition to capture locations that hold meaning beyond the landscape itself.
Observations of natural landscapes through composition, form and colour
Prior to starting the artwork, I study the landscape’s natural composition, form and colour using detailed photographs taken in situ, using my notes to make preliminary sketches using pencil on the canvas. I particularly pay attention to the way that light falls across the landscape, and the resulting shadows and depth of colour caused - this is an integral part to my process.
Considering the importance of personal memory and emotional response to places
For me, the places which I paint are more than just a point on a map - they represent something personal to someone. When creating an artwork, my aim is to sensitively interpret the way that the natural landscape physically looks alongside how its atmosphere has shaped the way that it resonates with someone’s memory, and vice versa.
